One of the founding members of Boyle AC, Melissa Doohan, tells Irish Runner how the idea of starting a running club in the Roscommon town became a reality, attracting a current membership of more than 150 runners of all levels and abilities
IR:What got you thinking about starting a club in Boyle? MD:Not long after the Lough Key parkrun was established in May 2016, I developed a friendship with a member of the Core Team, Helen Beirne. Helen asked if I would like to accompany her on Sundays for a ‘long run’. I was delighted to be asked but terrified I wouldn’t be able. However, Helen introduced me to the world of easy running and after that first Sunday I was hooked. We met every Sunday and I built my distances all the way up to 18 miles with her.
