A good-news story emerging from the Irish running scene is the continued soaring success of The Daily Mile, which has been embraced by 650 primary schools around the country, according to Athletics Ireland. The Daily Mile Team at Athletics Ireland comprises Anthony White, manager; Nick Skelly, project coordinator; and Frank Greally, ambassador. They work closely with all Local Sports Partnerships (LSP), throughout the country and the combined efforts of Athletics Ireland and the LSPs have already resulted in a great success story. “Since early January, we have seen a huge surge in interest from primary school teachers and principals who are eager to put their school on The Daily Mile map,” said Mr White. “Athletics Ireland, in association with LSP, will continue to drive forward with the promotion of this initiative and we will work closely with the schools taking part,” he said. “It gives me great joy to visit primary schools and witness The Daily Mile in action,” said Mr Greally. “It’s lovely to hear teachers describe the great improvements they see in children’s concentration, fitness levels, demeanour and social interaction after only a few weeks participating in The Daily Mile.” Athletics Ireland CEO, Hamish Adams, is a strong advocate of The Daily Mile, describing it as a ‘great way for children to gradually build an endurance base, with wide-ranging benefits for health and fitness – physical and mental’.
