Ireland’s sprint star Rhasidat Adeleke is set to make her highly anticipated return to the 400 metres when she takes to the track at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on July 3.
One of the world’s premier athletics meetings, the Diamond League event marks Rhasidat’s first competitive outing over one lap in almost a year and signals the start of an exciting new chapter in her 2026 campaign.
The Irish record-holder returns to Hayward Field with unfinished business. At last year’s Prefontaine Classic she produced a strong fourth-place finish in 51.33, and all eyes will once again be on the European silver medallist as she renews her challenge against one of the strongest 400m fields in world athletics.
At just 23 years of age, Adeleke has already secured her place among the sport’s global elite. Her Irish record of 49.07, fourth-place finish at the Paris Olympic Games, and consistent performances on the international stage have established her as one of the world’s premier quarter-milers and a genuine contender whenever she steps onto the track.
The Eugene meeting also marks the beginning of an important Diamond League stretch, with another elite 400m appearance already confirmed for the Monaco Diamond League on July 10.
The weeks ahead promise to be pivotal. Every race will provide an opportunity to build momentum, sharpen race rhythm, and continue closing the gap on the world’s very best.
For Irish athletics supporters, Rhasidat’s return to her signature event is one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the summer, as one of Ireland’s brightest sporting stars resumes her pursuit of international success.
