ASICS GT-2000 14 GTX Review

Introduction

Asics14th instalment in the popular GT-2000 series stays true to its predecessor’s winning formula while featuring some significant improvements. With updated foam and a focus on stability, the GT-2000 14s deliver a stable and responsive feel, catering to runners who want a controlled and comfortable ride. The winterized GTX edition deliver further stability and comfort in damp conditions.

Testing Experience

Midsole

One of the major changes featured in the 14s is the midsole’s upgraded foam. They feature FF Blast Max foam instead of the previous FF Blast+ of the 13s. The new foam is softer and bouncier, allowing for seamless, energetic transition from heel to take off. With the updated foam comes a 3g increase in weight over the previous GT-2000, a small jump which is definitely worth the improved stability and comfort. The shoe features an 8 mm drop.

Upper

The GT-2000 14 GTX has an upper which is geared towards maximal comfort during winter conditions. It features a woven mesh material bonded with waterproof Gore-Tex. The upper keeps rain out of the shoe and insulates the foot without sacrificing breathability. Inside is an Ortholite X-30 sockliner which cushions and manages moisture, keeping the foot cool and dry. The shoe sits snug around the upper foot and is roomy in the toebox which adds some extra comfort during longer runs. Its tongue is thin and collar padded well, giving a secure locked-in feel. The shoe fits true to size.

Outsole

As with the upper section of the shoe, the outsole is designed to function well in wetter conditions. Asic’s goal was to create a “trail specific outsole” with strong traction to overcome slippery and damp surfaces. AHAR (Asics High Abrasion Rubber) comes in generous coverage on the outsole. The low-density rubber covers important sections of the shoe’s bottom in segmented rubber pods. The material and coverage makes running on uneven or low traction surfaces much more enjoyable.

Verdict

The GT-2000 14 GTX is a great trainer for those seeking comfort and stability. It’s clear that Asics’ focus was to create an everyday trainer for trail runners and those who run in wet or damp conditions. The Gore-Tex waterproofing technology of the upper and the AHAR configuration in the outsole are standout features which make this shoe a great choice for runners this winter.
