Brooks Hyperion Max 3 Review

Introduction

The Brooks Hyperion Max 3 marks a significant evolution in the Hyperion line—finally living up to the “Max” name. With a truly max‑cushion stack, dual‑density midsole, SpeedVault nylon plate, and RapidRoll rocker geometry, this shoe aims to blend plush comfort with propulsion for training that straddles recovery runs and race‑pace efforts .

My Testing Experience

From the first toe‑off, the Hyperion Max 3 delivers a soft yet bouncy feel. I appreciated how it’s comfortable enough for long, easy kilometres yet responsive when shifting into tempo pace. The mid‑top drop of 6 mm (46 mm heel / 40 mm forefoot) gives noticeable height but still maintains a natural swing through my stride. Overall my experience running with these shoes was very enjoyable and definitely enhanced my performance in comparison with previous shoes I have worn whilst running.

Midsole

The dual‑density midsole is the center of the Hyperion Max 3’s character. A top layer of 100% PEBA-based Dna gold provides plush, bouncy softness, while a more resilient bottom layer of Dna flash V2 supports energy return and avoids feeling overly mushy . The SpeedVault propulsion plate adds forward momentum without the rigidity of carbon, and the RapidRoll rocker geometry makes heel‑to‑toe transitions feel effortless and fluid . Overall, the midsole excels as a “super‑trainer” performer—protective, yet springy and versatile.

Upper

The upper features a lightweight, highly breathable engineered mesh—approximately 76% recycled content—that fits like a sock and locks the foot in effectively. Runners praised its airy ventilation and comfort around the collar and heel counter . The updated asymmetrical tongue improves lockdown but initially can cause slight pressure until broken in .

Outsole

The shoe’s outsole uses Roadtack rubber in strategic areas for durability and traction. The broad footprint helps compensate for the high stack, minimizing that wobble common with max‑cushion shoes. In testing, traction held up well, although midsole durability remains to be seen over high mileage .

Conclusion

At last, the Hyperion Max 3 nails the “super‑trainer” brief that Brooks aimed for. Its midsole strikes an ideal balance of plush comfort, energetic bounce, and smooth transitions. The refined upper delivers ventilation and lockdown with a secure fit, while the outsole brings dependable grip. Yes, it’s heavier and taller than its predecessor, but that’s a fair trade for the elevated ride. For recovery runs, tempo days, or long efforts where both cushioning and responsiveness matter, the Hyperion Max 3 stands out—finally embodying the “Max” in name and performance.
