HOKA Bondi 9 Review

Irish Runner Magazine has partnered with Intersport Elverys to review the HOKA Bondi 9, as JADE DOHERTY takes the latest model of the brand’s iconic cushioned running shoe out on the road.

Introduction

The Bondi line has always been one of Hoka’s most recognisable shoes, and the Bondi 9 continues that reputation as a highly cushioned, comfort-focused daily trainer. It sits firmly in the max-cushion category and is designed for runners who prioritise protection, smooth transitions, and overall comfort rather than speed.

The women’s Bondi 9 keeps the signature Hoka look with its oversized midsole and rocker geometry, but it also introduces some thoughtful updates compared to previous versions. The midsole foam has been refreshed to improve responsiveness, while the upper has been refined to offer a more comfortable and breathable fit.

This is not a shoe built for chasing personal bests or fast sessions. Instead, it is designed to make everyday running feel easier on the body. Whether it is long easy miles, recovery runs, or simply spending long hours on your feet, the Bondi 9 is built with comfort at the centre of its design.

My Testing Experience

Testing the Bondi 9 confirmed exactly where this shoe shines. It naturally encourages a slower, more relaxed pace where the cushioning and rocker shape can do their job. From the first run it felt smooth and protective, particularly during easy mileage where the goal is simply to move comfortably rather than push the pace.

The rocker geometry helps guide your stride forward without needing to think about it. Instead of feeling flat or heavy, the shoe rolls you gently through each step which keeps the run feeling fluid and consistent.

Over longer runs, the cushioning really stands out. The impact protection is noticeable and my legs felt fresher afterwards compared with firmer daily trainers. While the Bondi 9 can handle some steady efforts, it definitely feels most natural at comfortable paces where its cushioning can be fully appreciated.

Midsole

The biggest update in the Bondi 9 is the introduction of a new supercritical EVA midsole. Compared with the previous foam, it feels lighter, softer, and slightly more responsive underfoot.

The shoe still delivers the plush ride the Bondi line is known for, but it now has a bit more life to it. The high stack height provides excellent impact protection, particularly for heel strikers or runners covering longer distances.

Despite the amount of cushioning, the shoe feels stable. The foot sits slightly inside the midsole rather than on top of it, which creates a cradled feeling and helps prevent the shoe from feeling overly soft or unstable. Combined with Hoka’s rocker design, the midsole creates a smooth, rolling transition from heel to toe.

Upper

The upper has been updated with an engineered knit material that feels comfortable straight away. It offers a soft, flexible fit while still holding the foot securely during runs.

Breathability is good and the material adapts well to the shape of the foot, which adds to the overall comfort. Around the heel, the collar has been slightly redesigned with a more supportive structure that reduces irritation around the Achilles.

The fit is generally accommodating, particularly through the toe box, and Hoka continues to offer wide options which is helpful for runners who prefer extra room.

Outsole

The outsole uses durable rubber in key areas to improve grip and longevity. The placement of the rubber sections helps maintain flexibility while still protecting the midsole from wear.

Traction is reliable on standard road surfaces and the shoe feels secure during normal training runs. It is not designed for aggressive cornering or speed work, but for everyday road running it performs exactly as expected.

Verdict

The Bondi 9 stays true to what the Bondi series does best: delivering maximum cushioning and consistent comfort. The updated midsole adds a welcome touch of responsiveness while maintaining the soft, protective feel runners expect from this shoe.

It is not the lightest or fastest trainer available, but that is not what it is trying to be. Instead, it excels as a reliable daily trainer for easy miles, recovery runs, and anyone who values comfort above everything else.

For runners looking for a highly cushioned shoe that keeps their legs feeling protected during longer or more relaxed runs, the Bondi 9 continues to be one of the strongest options in the max-cushion category.
