Irish Photographer Shortlisted for World Athletics Photograph of the Year

Irish photographer Morgan Treacy (INPHO Sports) was recently shortlisted for the prestigious World Athletics Photograph of the Year award.

When two local primary school boys pitted their wits against each other down the home straight of the Karzee Mile at this year’s Cork City Sports International Athletics Meet in July, they could hardly have imagined their efforts gaining the attention of a global athletics audience but thanks to Morgan that happened.

The names and faces of Charlie Cummins (St Josephs Boys NS, Cobh) and Tommy Murphy (Beaumont Primary School, Blackrock) have been pitched alongside some of the sports biggest stars after Morgan’s brilliant capture of the duel at MTU Stadium made it on to the shortlist of the competition.

Whatever else becomes of the sporting careers of young Cummins & Murphy, they will always have that tale to tell their grandchildren in years to come about when they ended up mixing it with the World and Olympic champions of their time – the sprint sensation Noah Lyles, pole vaulting legend Mondo Duplantis and all-conquering distance runner Sifan Hassan amongst them.

Incidentally, it was also Morgan, a world-renowned photographer with experience of five Olympic Games, who captured a similarly dramatic photograph of Alfie Cummins, brother of Charlie, at this year’s Fota House Cross Country Challenge supported by Great Island Athletics in East Cork.

You can see both of Morgan’s photos below:
