Limerick AC – Trailblazers Honoured at Castletroy Park

An evening of celebration at the Castletroy Park Hotel on December 3rd honoured the extraordinary women who reshaped the landscape of Limerick Athletics.

In 1962, a courageous group — Mary Cronin, Patsy O’Regan, Mary Flanaghan, Chris Kelly, Joan Kelly, Patsy Sheehan and the late Breda Shaughnessy — became the first female members of Limerick AC.

Their determination and refusal to accept limits opened doors for generations to come.

This event acknowledged their lasting impact locally and nationally. Their legacy continues to inspire athletes of all ages.

“When you run first, you don’t just break the tape — you break barriers for everyone who comes after.”
